More deadly than The Mail

The Daily Mail is the latest in a succession of British newspapers to have shot itself in the foot, this time over its reporting in the story of Ed Milliband's Communist immigrant father. This incident plays into the continuing battle over freedom of the press in the UK.

The Mail first appeared on May 4th 1896, founded by the Harmsworth brothers Alfred and Harold, later Lord Northcliff and Lord Rothermere. A midnight chart is used here for the paper's launch. Sun in tropical Taurus seems an excellent fit for Middle England's in-house tabloid, with the opposition from Saturn in Scorpio providing the requisite touch of snobbery and narrow mindedness. The Mail's signature is suspicion and finger-pointing toward mavericks and outsiders.

From a Vedic astrology standpoint, this Sun-Saturn opposition moves into Aries and Libra, where each planets is exalted. If we take the midnight time as valid, there is also a powerful Lakshmi Yoga between the Sun and Saturn, ruling the ninth and second houses respectively. Jupiter in Cancer in the eighth house is another outstanding signature for both business and reporting. The Mail's aggressively normal editorial line clearly plays commercially, where even in its earliest days it had the largest circulation in the world. Today, The Mail Online is the world's most-visited news website. 

The Mail's earthy conservatism is still suggested by 3 planets in Taurus in the Navamsha chart. The paper is an opponent of GM crops and, before we are too damning, regularly contains features on astrology and holistic healing. The right-wing press are noticeably more inclined towards the mystical. 

One more thing, fact fans: Mail editor Paul Dacre is Prince Charles's astro-twin, both born November 14th 1948.
